You have a finite budget, maximize every marketing dollar!

Editor's Note: Today's top story is research firm IDTechEx's assessment of the opportunity for RFID in pharmaceuticals packaging.

Illinois Tool Works (ITW) has announced that it will purchase supply chain management software solutions provider Click Commerce for approximately $292 million. ITW is a $12.8 billion diversified manufacturer of highly engineered components and industrial systems and consumables. Read the announcement. Recall that last year publicly-traded Click Commerce launched an RFID consulting practice called Strategy 18 (see Click Commerce Launches RFID Consulting Practice).

SecureRF has hired Mike McGregor to head its research and development team. SecureRF is a provider of secure RFID solutions for high value asset tracking, monitoring, and anti-counterfeiting applications in the pharmaceutical, defense, and homeland security sectors. McGregor was a lead chip designer at Alien Technology, where over his four-year tenure he led the development of passive and semi-passive Gen1 and Gen2 RFID chips. Details here.

Philips Semiconductor has announced its new brand -- NXP -- complete with website and marketing campaign. NXP stands for "next experience", according to the company. Recall that last month Royal Philips Electronics, the conglomerate parent of Philips Semiconductors, signed an agreement to sell a majority stake in Semiconductors for EUR 8.3 billion ($10.2 billion) to a private equity consortium. NXP/Philips Semiconductors produces the company's RFID products, including Gen2 chips (see Philips Enters Gen2 RFID Chip Fray).

Forbes reports that the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications will approve active RFID for use on cargo passing in and out of the country. Doing so will allow tagged containers to be read at distances approaching 100 meters instead of the few dozen centimeters that the current use of passive RFID allows. The ministry will set the frequency to 433 MHz, the same that is commonly used for active RFID applications in the US.

Lastly, note the new classified listing below for a USA RFID Technology Group Stand at the 2007 CeBIT conference in Germany. The stand is an easy, cost-effective way for RFID vendors to exhibit at one of the world's largest technology tradeshows.

The Potential for RFID in Pharmaceutical Packaging

Research firm IDTechEx recently released an assessment of RFID adoption across the pharmaceuticals packaging industry. Summarized below are the key findings:
  • $2.1 billion by 2016. IDTechEx predicts that the healthcare industry's demand for RFID will reach $2.1 billion annually within ten years.

  • Big opportunity in compliance improvement. As many as 50% of patients do not take their medication correctly; they either take too much or too little of the medication, take it at the wrong time, or take it for periods that are too long or too short. By incorporating RFID into drug packaging, according to IDTechEx, the removal of a pill can be recorded, thereby effectively monitoring patients' drug-taking. The pharmaceutical industry hopes that such smart packaging will help rectify the expensive and sometimes dangerous issue of patient non-compliance. Indeed, IDTechEx cites a shifting interest away from the historical practice of developing new blockbuster drugs, and toward getting patients to take existing drugs correctly.

  • Residual benefits of smart packaging In addition to combating non-compliance, RFID-enabled packaging offers other benefits that are expected to improve the overall quality of pharmaceutical-based healthcare. The benefits include: engaging the patient as a participant in her own treatment; simplifying administration of drugs through automation; and providing interaction with the patient so that the regimen is continuously reinforced.

  • RFID to blend with sensors. IDTechEx predicts that eventually pharmaceutical packaging will incorporate sensors that can detect environmental characteristics like temperature. Such technology would allow a pill bottle's expiration date to change dynamically if the bottle has been over-exposed to heat, for example.

  • Tamper recording. RFID can record the moment a pharmaceutical package is tampered with. IDTechEx notes that investigators have already used the technology to make arrests. Sweden's Cypak is cited as a leader in this technology.
