Editor's Note: Thank you everyone who took the time to respond to our recent reader survey. Your feedback was phenomenal and we're looking closely at implementing a few of the ideas in particular.

One idea we have actually already implemented below. You'll see that we now display (site) links next to our sponsors' offers, allowing you to go directly to the advertiser's site.

Other feedback we received loud and clear was your interest in receiving RFID Update more often. Beginning in April, we are going to make this request a reality. We'll give you a little more information over the next three issues, but prepare to begin receiving all the most useful and timely RFID news on a more frequent basis.

Update on Wal-Mart's Mandate Progress

Many may be wondering about the status of Wal-Mart's mandate now that the January 1, 2005, deadline is almost three months past. While there haven't been any officially published reports from the retailer itself, company representatives including CIO Linda Dillman and manager of RFID strategy Simon Langford have commented publicly on the progress. IDTechEx has compiled some of these stats into a report, whose highlights include:
  • As of the end of January, all systems accountable to the mandate are in place.
  • 104 Wal-Marts, 35 Sam's Clubs, and 3 distribution centers have RFID systems installed.
  • Roughly half of the 100 mandated suppliers completed the deployment without outsourcing to consultants or integrators.
  • RFID data reads are made available within 30 minutes on Wal-Mart's Retail Link site for its suppliers.
  • As of March 1st, Wal-Mart has received an aggregate total of more than 23,500 tagged pallets and 660,000 tagged cases, comprising more than 5 million RFID data reads.
Despite a few hiccups, lots of moaning and groaning, and deadline slippage by a handful of suppliers, the mandate is considered a success. Indeed, the retailer is moving ahead full-steam: the 200 next largest Wal-Mart suppliers are under mandate to deploy RFID by January 1, 2006.

Reports of Homeland Security RFID Cards False

Officials of the U.S. Department of Homeland have refuted widely-published reports of two weeks ago that the agency is preparing to roll out an RFID-equipped identification card for its 40,000 employees. While radio frequency technology will indeed feature in the card, it will be in the form of a protocol called ISO/IEC 14443, which is fundamentally different than RFID. At only five inches, ISO/IEC 14443's transmission range is one-tenth that of RFID's. Furthermore, ISO/IEC 14443's inherent characteristics include security and encryption mechanisms notably found lacking in RFID. Apparently, the Department of Homeland Security never even considered RFID for the card for precisely that reason. This should come as a comfort to the many privacy advocates that worried the government was neglecting employee security by moving ahead with the supposed RFID-enabled cards. If the following quote by an agency official in CIO Insight is any indication, RFID-enabled people-tracking is not on Homeland Security's agenda: "RFID tags are simple things, [similar] to bar codes, for identifying goods that are moving through lines."

Zebra: 2004 Was Year of Testing, 2005 Will Be Year of Deployment

More than 800 people were present at the "Making a Difference" RFID webcast at which Wal-Mart's manager of RFID strategy, Simon Langford, gave the keynote address. Echoing Linda Dillman's speech at RFID World earlier this month, Langford reiterated the point that RFID is "journey which is just beginning." (Wal-Mart has consistently tried to drive home to its suppliers that they should take the long-term view on RFID implementation rather than preoccupying themselves with near-term ROI.)

RFID printer manufacturer Zebra Technologies was a sponsor of the event. The company's vice president and general manager of RFID noted that the recent progress of RFID has been impressive and encouraging, especially when compared with the far slower adoption pace of past transformative technologies like the bar code. Matt Ream, Zebra's senior manager for RFID systems, predicted, "2004 was primarily the year of pilot testing RFID technology. 2005 is the year of deployment." Given that 200 additional Wal-Mart suppliers are under mandate to roll out RFID by January 1, 2006, and that the Top 100 will surely continue refining and expanding their own new deployments, this seems an apt prediction.

Conference to Focus on RFID Tag Price

Whether or not you agree that tag price is the leading benchmark of RFID adoption, many in the industry continue to focus on this metric and how quickly (or not) it is declining. Take for example the "Low-Cost RFID IC Packaging and Assembly: Roadblock on the Highway to a 5-cent RFID Tag" workshop being hosted next week by TechSearch International in Austin, Texas. Presenters will hail from some of the most notable industry players, including Philips, Alien, Symbol, Texas Instruments, and Motorola. The keynote will be given by Sun Microsystems' Business Development Manager of Manufacturing, Rick Koskella, and Harvard Business School professor Gitanjali Swamy will give a talk on "The Cost Model for RFID." According to the brochure, "The purpose of the workshop is to provide a forum for experts on all aspects of RFID IC packaging and assembly to present their work. The workshop will create a networking opportunity for those concerned with the technology and economics of RFID tag assembly."

Intermec Wins First of Five Big RFID Government Contracts

Intermec has won the first of five contracts to be awarded by the U.S. federal government throughout 2005 as part of the Automatic Information Technology (AIT) RFID initiative. Winning this first bid means that Intermec will provide the government with UHF passive EPC Class 1 RFID tags. The remaining four contracts will be for RFID readers, printers, software, and services.

Intermec has a two-decade history of selling to the government. Last year, as part of the same AIT government initiative, the company landed a five-year contract to provide the government all manner of mobile computing and automatic identification products and services.

In other Intermec news (aside from the Symbol suit), Malaysia's The Star Online reports that the company is setting up an operation in the South Asian nation with an eye on the logistics, retail, and manufacturing sectors.
